The practice of Zazen... deep stillness... can help us to notice that a lot of the suffering we experience started with the survivalist aspect of our mind, trying to soothe its self-centered insecurities. That's where the doubts, anxiety, restlessness, irritability, discontent, and disconnection are arising from.
Those thoughts revolving around the axis of "self," sometimes known as self-obsession, result in a kind of centrifugal force that pulls us towards self-centered activity as a result that becomes a part of the mind's story of suffering about its own experience.
