Freedom Through Not Knowing

I don't always have to know what I'm doing… or where it's going. I have a tendency to move with intuition first… allowing logic to complement what I discover along the way. Some might refer to this as having a 'Beginners mind,' instead of having to be an accomplished expert that has everything figured out.

That said, in my direct experience, what matters is my willingness to pay attention… to notice… and to commit wholeheartedly instead of half-heartedly to what I'm doing… right here… right Now… without holding anything back in reserve.

In zazen, I don't sit because I already know what I'll discover. I sit because of my lack of knowing and certainty, learning to naturally be with the "What Is." I simply take my seat… settle into the posture… and give myself to the practice. There's no need to manufacture an experience or anticipate an outcome.

I've given myself permission to apply This Way of Being to how I meet my life as well.

Commitment doesn't require certainty. It requires presence… humility... sincerity… having the ability to be awkward and clumsy without disassembling... and the willingness to remain open to what I don't yet know. Not knowing doesn't have to be a problem asking to be solved… oftentimes, it's exactly what makes discovery possible.

And sometimes… the Way reveals itself when I'm willing to set aside what the mind 'thinks' it already knows… and simply use my own eyes to see what's actually here.
